What to do with old medication…National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Do you have old prescription medications sitting around?  If you do, you’re not alone.  The DEA, sponsor of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day reports it has collected over 2 million pounds of prescription medications in its five previous Drug Take-Back events.  Their next event is this Saturday, April 27, 2013 from 10AM to 2PM.   Per the DEA’s website,  “The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of these medications.”

Click here to access the DEA’s website and get more information on how to participate in this event.  Once there you can input your zip code and be provided with a list of law enforcement agencies in your area who will take back unused medication.  I quickly discovered there were 12 such locations within 10 miles of my home.  If you’re unable to participate in this event, the FDA has an excellent informational piece on how to safely dispose of unused medications, which you can access by clicking here.

Thanks in advance for helping to keep prescription drugs out of the hands of those who shouldn’t have them.
